The discovery of penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming nearly a century ago transformed medicine. Thanks to antibiotics, we can treat a host of diseases that used to kill millions of people around the globe every year. Unfortunately, the long-term effectiveness of many drugs is at risk.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization released a new survey showing people around the globe lack a basic understanding of how antibiotics work and how they should be used. And that’s a huge problem as we struggle to stop the growth and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
